Bonfire Night is over, the rain is lashing down, Christmas catalogues are littering the doormat and you are starting to crave mince pies and mulled wine.  But before you reach for your iPad and log into Amazon, how about doing things differently this Christmas?

Avoid the High St crush, bypass the big brands, support small businesses/makers and give original and different presents without breaking the bank. We think that this can be done and here are our top 3 tips for success.

  1. Visit Local Christmas Markets:   Look out for the best ones in your local area. Here in Cornwall we thoroughly recommend the regular Christmas markets on Truro's Lemon Quay, and the one-off events at The Lost Gardens of Heligan, in Fowey and in Bude. Pick original gifts at the best prices because you are buying directly from the maker. Sample great local food and drink, enjoy some mulled wine and have a thoroughly good time into the bargain.
  2. Use Facebook and Instagram: There are lots of small businesses out there trying to get your attention and most of them are to be found on social media. Make the most of the search options, look at hashtags for the kind of things you want, then take a good look at what people sell before you click through to their website.
  3. Support your Local Stores: Whilst High Street chains are suffering, there are a growing number of independent stores who are bucking the trend by spotting and supporting new brands and offering a personal and friendly service. We deal with a lot of great stores managed by smart people who will give the time to help you find the perfect gift or the right outfit. Look at our stockist list for inspiration:

Come along and say hello to us and over 100 other Makers, Bakers and hopefully a fair few Christmas Elves.
